“What amazed me the most was the way in which Dominic Cooper handled his characters”After all, this move has received a lot of praise at the Berlin and Sundance festivals. And neither does it deserve a bad review. The fact is that it came almost two weeks later than its release in UK (Aug 10). I was really excited to see the movie after watching its trailer. A friend of mine pointed out to me that this film had released here. I was actually surprised.Because, I wasn’t expecting its release here. When was the last time a movie other than a big budget franchise or a super-hero or a secret spy or  some ‘waste-of-time’ horror movies, released in India. I WANTED TO SEE THE TREE OF LIFE! Thats what disappointed me this year,so far.Alright, now about the movie. The devil we’re talking here about is the buck-toothed Uday, son of Saddam (you-know-who) Hussein. There were several reports about Saddam Hussein using doubles and also allegations that the Saddam that the US executed was a double( only rumored; its totally rubbish). Uday Hussein was Saddam’s eldest son. He was well known in Iraq, for his crimes and other misconduct. Now he wishes to continue this erratic life but at the same time  has to attend to several other appointments connected with his state. So he finds Latif, an old friend of his, with whom he had studied in school, for this and also for his safety. Uday threatens to execute Latif’s family if he doesn’t work for Uday,as his double. Latif is left with no other option, than to “extinguish” himself and become another Uday.Latif finally ends up folling in love with Uday’s girlfriend! But thats not it, ok..! I know, the way I put the previous line makes you feel like forgetting even the title. But believe me,you wouldn’t be disappointed. The plot of this movie,I think, was not thrilling enough, unlike its trailer. Its quite ‘guessable’ and seemed short to me. But what amazed me the most was the way in which Dominic Cooper handled his characters. He actually played 3 lifes. We have Uday on one side- who is eccentric  with a squeaky voice. On the other side we have Latif, quite an introvert and serious looking character. And then, there is a third character that the actor had to deal with, which is ‘Latif acting as Uday’. O Boy! The way he(Latif) trains to act like Uday are some of the great scenes in the movie. I do not know how close Cooper was to the original Uday, but the character creates a mark in your mind. As I’ve mentioned before, his squeaky tone, his movements, the abrupt transitions in his behavior,of course his stupidity,in a nut-shell, Dominic Cooper had plenty of space to work with his character. The Devil’s Double comes from Lee Tamahori, remember, the Die Another Day director? Its based on the book that goes by the same name written by Latif Yahia who also co-wrote the screenplay for the movie(Yup,the Latif who was the double). Nowadays, Hollywood’s riding a lot of its luck on the phrase “Based on a true story”. Its turning into something like taking bail, I mean, if the movie becomes a flop..Goddammit! blame it on the book!  But I wouldn’t say this movie’s heading towards it. The director, has carried out a decent effort, in bringing out this movie in the middle of ‘the year of super-heroes’. With Cinematography, perfectly suiting the middle-eastern look, and also making use of original war footage in the movie, and music being a blend of the typical middle eastern sounds merged with orchestra with some disco turning up here and there; technically, the film is a pleasure to watch. And well, for all pure-action lovers, there’s guns, sex and explosions.Final Verdict: 76 %Enter your email address to subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email.Join 971 other followers Better Call Saul (2015- )Blog at WordPress.com.
