Folks, a very cool new trip just hit the travelsphere.A guided tour of both the North and South Poles! This ridiculously expensive, 11-day adventure will start with a three-night stay in Finnish Lapland—aka the North Pole, aka Santa’s hometown—complete with glass igloos and (hopefully) a glimpse at the Northern Lights. From there, you’ll take an Arctic cruise, head down to Cape Town (the jetting off point for anyone headed to Antarctica), before finally setting off for a South Pole camping trip. This trip is pretty crazy, am I right? If you love the idea, but can’t afford the totally insane price tag, here’s how to cobble together a similar trip that won’t require you to refinance your home:Smit / ShutterstockThis part of the trip you can totally do! Flights to Scandinavia are dirt cheap, especially during the winter. If you’ve got hearty bones and don’t mind the cold, you’ll be going on one of the cheapest vacations you’ve ever taken.Go skiing, snowshoeing, visit Santa Claus at his own, personal home, and of course, stay in one of those glass igloos. There’s no better way to see the Northern Lights dancing from the comfort of your own bed, and really, it’s hard to beat in the romance department.Diriye Amey / ShutterstockDoing both the Arctic and South Africa in a single trip might be too much for you wallet (and ours, too!), so why not split this adventure into two totally separate trips? Both of these places should be on your bucket list, but there’s no reason to cram them into a single vacation.South Africa’s gorgeous almost all year round, with incredible views and culturally exciting urban centers like Cape Town and Johannesburg. Drive the latter’s famous Ring Road for some of the most incredible vistas in all of Africa. And, don’t forget, South Africa’s famous for its delicious wines. Just make sure you’re done driving for the night before you kick back with a glass or three!Volodymyr Goinyk / ShutterstockWe hate to break it to you, but there’s just no way to get to the South Pole without forking over gazillions of dollars. If this is really, really important to your travel goals, there are several ways to touch the bottom of the Earth. Before you pull the trigger, though, consider why you’re going. If it’s penguins and snow you seek, you can find those in other, more accessible places on Earth (like Lapland and South Africa, conveniently!). Plus, the environment in the South Pole is incredibly fragile. Tourism endangers the ecosystem’s careful balance, which is something to seriously consider before you fly South for the winter. If you decide to go forth with your Antarctic dreams, make sure you head to South Africa first. All flights and/or ships that make way to the South Pole take off from there. What do you think about this crazy North/South Pole travel extravaganza? Is Antarctica on anyone’s bucket list?
