The U.S. star, who also had a film role in The Godfather, died at his childhood home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday. The cause has not been revealed. His song Here In My Heart claimed the number one position when the New Musical Express introduced its chart in November 1952, and it remained there for nine weeks, a record which has been beaten by only six records since. He also scored hits with Spanish Eyes and The Man From Laramie during a 50-year career. Former bricklayer Martino, an Italian-American born Alfred Cini, also had an acting career and played crooner Johnny Fontane in The Godfather and The Godfather: Part III, a role said to have been based on Frank Sinatra. At the time Martino topped the first UK 'hit parade', the chart was compiled in a very different way. Sales figures were taken from just a handful of shops, mainly in London, compared with the nationwide network of stores used to compile more recent charts. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II, and was wounded during the invasion of Iwo Jima.
