How the sleek, blue performance car stole the show spotlight at the Detroit Auto Show In a video Ford released of their latest GT, their supercar is referred to as an ‘artifact from the future. Debuted at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the sleek, blue performance car stole the show spotlight. If you associate Ford with sensible and practical products like Taurus sedans and F-150 pickup trucks, well the GT is none of those things. Except that like it’s mass market cousins, it was quite successful at what it was designed to do. So much in fact that it is a legend.Automotive enthusiasts and Ford fanatics have been badgering Ford to produce a second model of the GT since the first generation ended production in 2006. Created in part to honor the automaker’s centennial year, it was at the time a modern day interpretation of the GT40, which if you’ve never heard the story, came to be by a fascinating series of events motivated by revenge and humiliation. Not your typical design brief.// Post by PSFK. Entire books have been written about this story but the essence is that early in 1963, Ford was contacted that Enzo Ferrari was interested in selling Ferrari to the Ford Motor Company. Ford reportedly spent millions of dollars auditing Ferrari’s factory and assets and conducting legal negotiations surrounding the sale. Everything was on track for the transfer to take place until Enzo Ferrari was told he couldn’t race at the Indianapolis 500. Ferrari negotiated to remain sole operator of his company’s motor sports division, where his true passion was but Ford was already fielding cars with Ford engines at the Indy race and didn’t want a competition from Ferrari. The angered Ferrari cut off talks with Ford and backed out of the deal. An enraged Henry Ford II reacted and directed the Ford racing division to build a new endurance sports car which Ford could use to beat Ferrari specifically at the Le Mans 24 hours race where Ferrari dominated. The Ford GT40 won the race overall in it’s debut year (1966) and went on to win the next three years in a row. The GT40 remains to this day, the only designed and built car from the United States to win overall at Le Mans. The on-track performance of the GT40 elevated it to icon status but it also got a boost with an on screen performance in the 1971 Steve McQueen film Le Mans. McQueen bought the car used in the film and back in 2012, it sold at auction for $11 million, making it the most expensive American car sold at the time. Ford GT90 concept car. CN-315025-23 Updating the GT40 must have been a dream and nightmare task for Ford designers in 1994. How do you improve and modernize such a recognized product without ruining it? The result of a fast tracked 6-month development program was unveiled at the 1995 Detroit Auto Show – the GT90. It was a bold and futuristic take on the GT40 which introduced Ford’s ‘New Edge’ design philosophy which favored angular surfaces and sharp lines. The GT90 was polarizing at the time, you either liked it or despised it as a caricature of the original. Ford GT90 concept car. CN-315025-22 Not content to leave the GT40 alone, fast forward 7 years to 2002 when Ford revealed the GT40 Concept. Designed by Camilo Pardo who lead Ford’s ‘Living Legends’ studio, the GT40 Concept was a much closer interpretation of the iconic race car and it came at peak time for the ‘retro’ design movement. While the exterior was more vintage in look, the design interior slanted more machine-inspired sophistication. The rabble rousing personality of the original GT40 coincidentally or intentionally revealed itself again with the unveiling of the second generation GT at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show except this time it wasn’t Ferrari that got shadowed, it was Acura. Prior to the show opening, the most anticipated debut was supposed to be Acura’s second generation NSX super car. Acura had been working on developing the production version for several years and commenced a lengthy slow drip of sneak peaks including a cameo in the Avengers movie and YouTube videos of testing at the Nurburgring. It was to be Acura’s day except Ford’s press conference happened earlier in the morning and the GT reveal was a complete surprise. The GT went on to take the Eyes On Design prize for Best Production Vehicle from the Detroit show, denying Acura the win. The latest incarnation is both familiar and vastly different from any other of it’s older siblings. The exterior doesn’t reach as far as the GT90 or calmly evolve the retro feel of the car it replaces yet it blends elements of both. While it isn’t known if this version of the GT will return to race at the real Le Mans, it will see lots of track time on virtual circuits of the Forza 6 video game.
